Fallas 2011

For Valencia, the 19th March is the day of a great celebration. This is the night of fire – the explosive finale to Fallas.

The celebration starts on the 1st march and from this date through to the 19th March at 14:00 there is an amazing mascletá in the Plaza Ajuntamento. To see this arrive a couple of hours early and find a cafe – it gets very busy. A mascleta is “daytime fireworks” – ear splittingly loud and very smokey but worth seeing!

On the 17th and 18th there is the offering to the Virgin of the Abandoned ones, where the Valencians parade, in full falleras costume with their fallero on the arm and bunches of flowers. The dress of the Virgin is created through the night with the flowers given during the offering.

On the 18th and 19th, you should take advantage of the lull and wander through the streets admiring the fallas ninots – stunning statues made only from wood and paper and some over 50 feet tall – you can usually find routes to

On the 19th the Cavalcade of the Fire in the streets of Valencia takes place. And at night, from 10:00 the “Nit of the Cremà” with “cremà of the infantile” begins This is the burning of the ninots. From 11:00 it continues with the “cremà” of the rest of the ninots, with the prize winner being lit at 1:00am. The fires will burn til dawn.

Amazingly if you wander the following day you will not see any remainder as the Spanish are excellent at clearing up the untidy streets that any fiesta creates…

The structures (ninots) need to be seen to be believed – some are bigger than the buildings around them!
