IVAM Valencian Institute of Modern Art

The intention of the IVAM, the Valencian Institute of Modern Art, is the investigation and diffusion of twentieth-century art. Its programme of activities offers permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, talks, courses, workshops and publications.

It has two premises: the Centre Julio González, opened in 1989, and the Sala de la Muralla opened in 1991.

The Centre Julio González is a newly-erected 18,000 m2 building, most of which is open to the public. Of the total floor space, 60% is occupied by eight galleries that house both permanent and temporary exhibitions. One of these galleries, with its own separate entrance, shows the remains of the mediaeval ramparts that once enclosed the city of Valencia. The galleries have been constructed in accordance with classical museum characteristics. Each of the three main galleries consists of five rooms, arranged in a straight line.

There is also a gallery specially designed for displays of sculpture. The building complies fully with current conservation and safety standards.
