Monastery of San Miguel of the Kings

Monasterio de San Miguel de los Reyes

The Hieronymite monastery of San Miguel de los Reyes (San Miguel of the Kings) rose in 16th century on the site of the old mercedaria abbey of Sant Bernat de Rascanya, thanks to the patronage of Duke de Calabria, Virrey of Valencia.

The building started in 1546 in the South cloister, following the plans of Juan de Vidaña and Alonso de Covarrubias. Shortly after the death of their founder, in 1550, the works practically became paralyzed. They were not started again until 1570, and were fully under the influence of the “Evangelistas de El Escorial”.

It was sold after confiscation and was on the verge of being demolished, but was presented it to the city council. In 1856 it was destined to be an asylum, and from 1859 to the mid 20th century, it served as a jail, this was followed by a period of abandonment. Today, rehabilitated to full splender, it contains the Valencian Library.

The church emphasizes a Renaissance facade-altarpiece, framed by two towers. The architecture has to be seen to be appreciated.
