San Juan of the Hospital

The church of San Juan del Hospital is one of the most interesting monuments in the city.

The historical place of San Juan Hospital has in its interior the oldest church of Valencia. It was founded in the 13th century (1238) by the Sovereign Military order and San Juan de Jerusalem.

Jaime I then made a donation in gratitude of lands located next to the door of the Xerea. Perhaps the passer by may ask is that a hospital?, since has never seen doctors or patients. It was based on the days of the crossed ones and for the care an order was created. One of the Horsemen of San Juan of the Hospital, made a declaration that bandages would be placed onto the wounded there.

The entrance is on the Calle de Trinquete de Caballeros, from there you go into a short vestibule, where you can see red crossings from the time of the crusades of the 13th century. Then to the North patio, where you find the old door of the church, although the current entrance to the building is by the bottom of the patio at the foot of the church. The Romanesque architecture is to be gazed as you stand in this monument.

Then there is the museum and the location of San Juan of the Hospital, temple and dependencies, was declared a Museum by the Conselleria of Culture, Education and Science of the Valencian Catalan Autonomous Government, on the 28th February 1997. Previously, on the 5th April 1943, it had been declared a Historical-Artistic Monument of National character.

This Museum investigates, presents and emphasizes the extraordinary, artistic and historical value, of this singular and venerable sanjuanista enclave of Valencia. The museum is dedicated to continuing the collaboration and promotion of the total restoration of the building. Numerous people have been in the museum for studies of investigation, projects on race or academic themes of History, Paleopatología, Restoration and Archaeology.
