Ninot Parade through Valencia

The traditional Ninot Parade of 1,100 people will tonight fill the streets of Valencia.
Leaving Calle Játiva at 22:30 (that’s Spanish 22:30 so be prepared to wait a little longer) via Marqués de Sotelo past the beautiful Post Office building – Correos – up to the doors of City Hall/Ayuntamiento on Plaza del Ayuntamiento, which will house the main ninot of Fallas 2011.
The arrival of the committee parade in the square will trigger a fantastic colourful mascletá (firework display, Spanish style).

On your first visit to the city of Valencia and to the Museo Fallero, located in a former Vincentian convent, you may find it hard to understand what exactly a falla is and what this Museum means.
Basically, fallas can be described as satirical monuments. They are models made of combustible materials (cardboard, wood, etc.) that are erected in public squares and at main crossroads and then burnt on the night of 19 March, St Joseph’s Day.

Museo Del Gremio De Artistas Falleros takes you on a journey of the ninot creation.
The profession of fallero artist is long and hard. The artist has always arranged his work with the orders of decoration, construction of floats and in the last few years, the accomplishment of fair stands and the theming of spaces for for the whole Fallas performance.
With new materials and the collaboration of designers with each other there has been an evolution of the activity of the fallero artist to continue creating decorations that need lasting and resistant construction for the use of the ninots and also to withstand the [...]

Welcome to the 75th Ninot Exhibition.

Ninots are tiny figures (compared to the big huge Fallas) which are placed within a Fallas exhibit. They provide some humor, often reflecting on the happenings of the past year.
It’s similar to the Carnival  from Germany and other places from around the world. The exhibit is a nice way to take a closer look at the often beautiful and artistic figures before they’re placed on the streets during La Planta and finally burned on La Crema.
One thing is certain – all the Ninots are burnt, except for the one saved by a public vote. [...]

For Valencia, the 19th March is the day of a great celebration. This is the night of fire – the explosive finale to Fallas.
The celebration starts on the 1st march and from this date through to the 19th March at 14:00 there is an amazing mascletá in the Plaza Ajuntamento. To see this arrive a couple of hours early and find a cafe – it gets very busy. A mascleta is “daytime fireworks” – ear splittingly loud and very smokey but worth seeing!
