a life in valencia Mercado colon valencia 2

The Mercado de Colón is located in the extension of the city between Columbus Street and Gran Via Marques de Turia in what was formerly the gas works of the Marquis de Campo.
It was designed in 1914 by Francisco Mora Berenguer (1875-1961) who studied at the School of Architecture in Barcelona and had direct contact with the Catalan modernism, especially the work of Gaudí, Puig , Domenech i Montaner and the design ideas of his professors Antonio M. ª Gallissà i Soque and Joan Torras i Guardiola.
Mora’s works were not considered modernist in his day. Mora’s modernism like Domenech i Montaner and Puig [...]

The North Train Station

a life in valencia Estacio_del_nord_valencia

Estacion del Norte is located in the heart of the city of Valencia, next to the Bullring and just 200m from the Town Hall.
It was built between 1906 and 1917 and took advantage of the urban transformation happening in the city at the time to settle in an enormous empty space. It is one of the most important monuments of civil architecture of the city.
The work, designed by architect Demetrio Ribes is part of the modernist style and you can appreciate the influences of the European side of the Secession, a modernism characterized by straight lines as opposed to the more typical sinuous [...]

Port Saplaya is in the municipal of Alboraya – Valencia.
It has sports, a port and all facilities including a Macdonalds!
There is a selection of Tapas bars and restaraunts along the front and a super little ice cream bar. It is a lesser known beach and often not crowded. It is the perfect hideaway to go and relax on long stretches of golden sands and marine blue sea.

Patacona Beach

Playa de Patacona
The beach of Patacona is the northern part of the city beach front, being further up it is more spacious and less crowded than Malvarossa.
Split from Malvarossa by a stream and a bridge, Patacona brings a marked difference. The sand itself is a much wider strip, giving a sensation of more space and tranquility.
The large bridge obstructs the view of the city to the right, taking you further away from the civilisation. The views of the coastline on the left are closer and prettier and the crowds are smaller, while the space is larger.
For all these reasons, Patacona [...]

Malvarossa Beach

Playa de Malvarossa is the central beach of Valencia.
This is where the locals will come on the weekends and holidays.
The water is gorgeous and the fine sand is great. During the summer weekends the whole of Valencia comes down to this beach. It is a noisy, busy atmosphere but being such a vast expanse never seems crowded.
There are a variety of restaurants all along the beach offering a whole range of foods to suit every type of taste and budget. The epicentre is the main entrance to the beach, a pedestrian square opposite the northern tram stop. This is where most people [...]

Playa las Arenas y Playa de Cabanyal
This beach is the beginning of the amazing sea front of Valencia.
The beach joins with the straights of the America’s Cup Port and it is the closest, the most built-up and the most accessible beach to the city and therefore it is the official city beach for activities and events. Whenever there is a sports event or a public event it generally happens here.
The southern part of this beach is a massive leisure area for promenades, events, restaurants, bars and hotels. The northern part becomes more of a traditional beach  gradually merging into the [...]

The Beach of Devesa

a life in valencia Devesa 1

Playa de la Devesa
La Devesa is an uncrowded and undeveloped nudist beach, with beautiful sands and crystal clear waters.
It is a favourite for many as it has all the quality of El Saler but none of the crowds. This is beacause it’s off the beaten track and completely undeveloped – car is the best option if you can. If you can’t then you need to travel 10 minutes further on the bus from El Saler and walk for another half an hour. Fortunately, the walk is gorgeous and will add extra enjoyment to your day.
At the entry point to La Devesa you [...]

Pinedo Beach

Playa de Pinedo
Pinedo beach is the nearest beach outside of Valencia and it has a nudist section.
It is the closest of the southern beaches and the first stop out of the city, although it doesn’t have the quality of El Saler, which is only another 5 minutes down the road.
With the El Saler beach so close, there is no particular reason to visit unless you are looking for a nudist area although Playa de la Devesa is a better option for the serious nudists but it’s another 15 min by bus and 20-30 minutes on foot. La Devesa is a real nudist [...]

Valencia Cathedral

valencia-cathedral-4

Catedral Valencia
Centrally located on the Plaza de la Reina, this is the religious centre of Valencia and one of the city’s landmarks.
Many centuries ago, it used to be a mosque, but when El Cid conquered the city, it became a Roman Catholic cathedral. Later the city was re-conquered by the Muslims as part of the Arab Moorish invasion of Spain and the South of France. The cathedral again became a mosque.
Later, when the Christian King Jaume I  re-conquered Valencia it reverted to a Christian cathedral. The Miguelete bell tower (El Miguelete) is a hexagonal Gothic tower towering over Plaza de la Reina. [...]

Mercado Central de Valencia – The Central Market

mercado-central-51

The Central Market of Valencia is constructed in a modernist style and was built in 1914.
The designers, Francisco Guard Vial and Alexander Soler, both trained at the School of Architecture of Barcelona and worked closely with Domènech i Montaner, an architect who characterized himself as a modernist.
There is great beauty in the architecture as well as the tradition and history of the market. The combination of metal, glass and the Gothic columns is a testament to modernism, as if the Market is a cathedral to the commerce-centre it once was.
The market is located at the Plaza del Mercado, next to La Lonja [...]
